                                                         Week Two / Saturday

Overcoming the Fear of…

Death

Since the children, as He calls them, are people of flesh and blood, Jesus Himself became like them and shared their human nature. He did this so that through His death He might destroy the Devil, who has the power over death, and in this way set free those who were slaves all their lives because of their fear of death.  - Hebrews 2:14-15

Jesus shared this truth after the death of His close friend Lazarus: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in Me will never die” - John 11:25-26

The good news is that Jesus of Nazareth has risen from the dead. He’s alive! We have the wonderful and beautiful assurance of His promise: “Because I live you also will live.”   - John 14:19

Our fear of death forgets that the One making this promise is Jesus, our risen Lord and Savior. After He was crucified on Calvary, He was buried in a borrowed tomb. He showed His power over death by rising from the dead to prove He is the resurrection and the life.

Christ wept with Mary and Martha, the sisters of Lazarus, and He weeps with us, and comforts us, in our time of sorrow. “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil, for You are with me” - Psalm 23:4

Jesus is preparing a place for us in heaven. And he will spend all of eternity with us. As he says, “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am.” - John 14:2-3

In what ways do you fear death?

Read Hebrews 2:14-15 one more time.

  • What does this scripture tell you about God?

  • What does this scripture tell you about your fear?

Prayer for Today:  Loving and Compassionate God, thank You that death is defeated, and we will spend eternity with You. Amen.
