                                                         Week Three / Tuesday

Overcoming the Fear of…

Commitment

“‘Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the Lord is finished.’”  - 1 Chronicles 28:20

By and large, the sum of our commitments tell the story of our lives.  For instance, everyone is given 1,440 minutes a day. No one is given more or less time. We all have 1,440 minutes to expense every day.

The same is true for how we spend our money, invest in our relationships, and in our physical, mental, and spiritual health. We can even go a bit further and say that these commitments reap generational consequences.

We are not afraid of commitment. This is not the issue. In fact, many of us are overly committed.  The fear of commitment arises when God calls.  God knocks. God asks. God intervenes.

God chooses Solomon to build an earthly dwelling place for Him on earth. A monumental and momentous task indeed.  Solomon has no prior experience nor education. He just happens to be King David’s son.  David therefore encourages his son, Solomon, to commit first to the presence of God before looking at the project God has called him to accomplish. It is the presence of God - the “withness” of God - that enables Solomon to do what God has called him to do.

It was the same for Abraham, Moses, Elizabeth, Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, you and me.  Jesus is Emmanuel - God with us. The Holy Spirit is the living presence of God with us. Affix your eyes on God. Commit your ways to Him. He will enable and empower you to do what He is asking you to do. Reconcile that relationship. Walk away from that bottle or bad habit. Share the good news with that lost friend.

Go for it. God is with you.

In what ways do you fear commitment?

Read 1 Chronicles 28:20 one more time.

  • What does this scripture tell you about God?

  • What does this scripture tell you about your fear?

Prayer for Today:  Lord, give me the courage to walk in your presence and have the courage to say “YES” to what you are calling me to do today.
